About

St. Joseph’s Church was established in 1849 in what was then known as the Township of Willoughby.

The modern day hamlet of Snyder, located on the Fort Erie-Niagara Falls border, has also been known as Black Creek and New Germany. The name Snyder came about when a post office was opened in the settlement and it was named Snyder after a Lutheran minister from that time.

Construction of the church begun in 1848 under the direction of the Jesuit Fathers. It was blessed on June 24, 1849, the Feast of John the Baptist, and was dedicated to St. Joseph. The Parish Hall was built in 1926.

The church shares a strong connection with the Sisters of Redemptoristine. The Sisters were located at the Monastery of the Holy Redeemer, located on the Niagara Parkway. Sadly, the relationship has not been sustainable.
